Johnny Depp as Hatter and Mia Wasikowska as Alice in Alice Through the Looking Glass Photos: CFP Traveling through the looking glass allows one to experience a curious , new world, Lewis Carroll said, author of the phenomenal Alice stories.

Disney's new film Alice Through the Looking Glass certainly offers a story line unheard of, if we are speaking of its extremely loose connections to the source material.

Simultaneously, however, it seems all too old-fashioned, with its key themes on being oneself , believing in friends and family values.

Director James Bobin takes over from the end of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland (2010), and opens the film with Alice (Mia Wasikowska) returning from China as a ship captain but finding herself oppressed by Victorian England's patriarchy.

Alice escapes to Underland, where she finds her best friend Hatter (Johnny Depp) dying from depression because nobody believes in the possibility of his family, who are thought dead, being alive.

To rescue him, Alice must steal the chromosphere, a gold ball that facilitates the time travel , from Time (Sacha Baron Cohen) and travel back to change history, which is ultimately risky and might destroy all.

The timeline jumps back and forth through different dates and settings to change the course of history.

The interesting part is that the chromosphere works exactly like a ship, and we see Alice sail through the stormy, sometimes formidable "ocean of time," which turns out to be far more than a metaphor by the White Queen (Anne Hathaway).

A number of twists and turns take place in scenes from the past, though none pushes the boundary of existing time-travel genre.

However, one of them , concerning a young Hatter and his seemingly solemn and demanding father, is touching.

The plot, seen as a whole, is passable at most. It manages to stress a few universal values, as well as make a feminist statement loud and clear, but all in way that seems mechanical and somewhat soulless.

Visually spectacular

While the story line itself is barely worth taking seriously, the production design and CGI effects are simply spectacular.

The cherry blossom trees under which Alice reunites with her Underland friends , for example, is of an utmost dreamy quality. Towns and castles, full of imagination, are simply fun to look at.

One of the most exciting scenes revolves around Alice traveling to the clock where Time resides, which is colossal for her, like a fortress.

She has to jump from the outer land to one of the "moving bridges," then another , to gain access to its center. Then, a panorama reveals that these "bridges" are in fact the two moving hands of the clock.

Wasikowska's and Depp's performances might be described as "dutiful," while Helena Bonham Carter offers a remarkable Red Queen (pictured above), who develops into a rounded character through a plot twist.

Her way of showing willfulness, jealousy and ruthlessness is a joy to watch, and her traces of innocence and insecurity under that fa?ade are treated subtly and cleverly.

But the most memorable part goes to the late Alan Rickman, who was the voice-over for Absolem (the blue caterpillar that led Alice to Underland) , and to whom the film is dedicated. It is a pity that it is the last time we hear the familiar, elegant voice that is abysmal on one hand and full of wisdom on the other.

BERLIN, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- The rapist and murderer of a Chinese overseas student in Germany was sentenced to lifelong imprisonment, and his accomplice received a youth penalty of five years and six months for sexual coercion, a court in eastern German town of Dessau-Rosslau delivered the verdict Friday.

Local media Mitteldeutche Zeitung reported both defendants, Sebastian F. and Xenia I., were also ordered to pay damages for pain and suffering of 60 ,000 euros.

Li Yangjie, a 25-year-old architecture student went missing while jogging on the evening of May 11, 2016 in the city of Dessau. Her disfigured body was found abandoned in brush near the crime scene two days later before the police identified the both 20-year-old male and female suspects.

According to prosecutors, the two lured her to an empty apartment and then sexually assaulted her. When they found Li still alive, they carried the severely wounded victim away and abandoned her outside.

The case aroused tremendous public attention in both China and Germany. The male culprit's parents are both police officers, and dpa reported there had been temporary suspicion that the parents might have an influence on the investigation.

Chinese expatriates and overseas students across Germany had held memorials in various localities following the tragedy, also demanding a fair and just handling of the case.

Farmers literally work a thankless , stinking job, particularly for those farmers who have to deal in cow manure. This is a job that is absolutely exhausting in the summertime, sticky, hot and stinky, and far too difficult for the average worker to accomplish. Working with manure is a specialized trait that can be rather lucrative, but only if a farmer has the right piece of equipment. This is why a piece of equipment like a New Idea Manure Spreader is such a good investment. It can handle tons at a time, shaving a lot of time and effort off a farmer’s workload.

However , the only way to make this investment pay off prope.
